MAARTEN PLATJE - Oil Paintings for Sale

Maarten Platje has established himself as one of the world’s foremost marine painters and is presently at the height of his powers.
At Marine Artists, London, we are proud to represent Maarten. He has used his mastery of painting ships and battles of the great age of sail to depict many American vessels and actions and in recent years he has been painting the huge and glorious panoply of British naval and maritime history, a subject that until now he has scarcely explored.
His English is excellent and most importantly enables him to research British subjects first-hand.
Maarten Platje was born at Rotterdam in The Netherlands in 1967. He studied art at the Ars Aemula Art Academy in Leiden and supplemented this training with several other art courses.
As a young man, Maarten spent some time as a sailor and this proved essential to his understanding of the sea and weather effects before he devoted himself to the painting of ships. He began exhibiting in 1986, building up his reputation as an outstanding marine painter, and his work won a number of awards and was shown in numerous exhibitions and major annual shows in Holland. Some paintings were used as book covers or published in prestigious Dutch magazines.
Maarten Platje’s method when producing a marine painting includes extensive preliminary research embracing written sources, period paintings and drawings, log books and ship models, some from his own collection and others from museum or private collections. Historical accuracy is paramount in the production of his paintings and in this he follows the methods of, among others, Geoff Hunt, who Maarten acknowledges as a pre-eminent master of historical marine painting.
In 1996 Maarten was invited by The Royal Netherlands Navy to embark on a Dutch frigate taking part in NATO operations in the Mediterranean during the war in the former Yugoslavia. This forms a lovely parallel with the great 17th century Dutch marine painter Willem van de Velde, the Elder, who was also an official artist for the Dutch fleet in his time.
This assignment resulted in a number of paintings illustrating naval operations which are now on permanent display at the Naval Museum in Den Helder and at the museum of the Marine Corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy in Rotterdam.
In addition, Maarten Platje’s paintings are on permanent display in a number of galleries in the United States and are in many private collections in Europe and the United States.

COMMISSIONING MAARTEN PLATJE
At Marine Artists one of our main specialities is commissioning great marine and historical paintings for clients and collectors all over the world.
We are proud to represent Maarten Platje exclusively in the United Kingdom and recommend him strongly to clients wishing to commission a marine painting.
To commission your own painting from Maarten Platje, contact Charles Mayes cm@marineartists.co.uk or by telephone on +44 (0)20 7352 7759 and we will post or email you a free pack of information including our short guides "Commissioning a Painting from Maarten Platje" and "Price Guide and Timescale"
The commission process is very easy, straightforward and enjoyable.

22572
"The action off Guernsey in 1666 between the English frigate Orange and the French East Indiaman the armed fluyte Vierge du Bon Port."

Oil on Canvas

20 x 24 inches (51 x 61 cm)

Signed, lower right

Commissioned by a British Collection

This exceptionally interesting painting was commissioned by a client with a special interest in this 17th century ship action and connections to Guernsey, off which coast this vicious battle took place.

On the 29th of June 1666, the English frigate Orange, originally a Dutch ship taken as a prize and commanded by captain Christopher Gunman, came across the French fluyte Vierge du Bon Port – also of Dutch origin – off the west coast of Guernsey. He would be ennobled by Britain and showered with titles and honours by many other countries. However his flagship at the battle, HMS Vanguard, had been terribly damged not only by the battle but also by two severe storms. Thus the flagship of the victor of The Nile had to be towed into Naples by the beautiful frigate Thalia for repairs. This is the scene Maarten has painted; to the left can be seen a ship of the Royal Neapolitan Navy, flying their flag, and in the right background is a badly damaged British ship, the Alexander, awaiting repair. A lovely Royal Neapolitan barge, also flying their flag, approaches Vanguard. The British flagship flies a white ensign because Nelson, although an admiral of the blue, had ordered white to be flown in the battle, believing them to be more easily recognisable.

Yet this day was highly important for Nelson apart from the glory of his victory, for it was on this day that he met Emma Hamilton again and their famous affair was kindled. Naples was in wild and ecstatic celebration of the victory and Emma, wife of the British Envoy Sir William Hamilton was almost mad with excitement. She and Sir William went out in the Royal Barge with King Ferdinand IV of Naples and the Royal Family to greet the returning hero and it is reported that Emma fainted clean away on meeting Nelson.

Maarten Platje has succeeded in uniting several strands in this exceptional and lovely painting. There is the meticulous rendering of these beautiful and intricate ships (the detail in this painting is incredible and should be studied closely); the depiction of the exotic old harbour in strong sunlight; a very interesting presentation of the other side of warfare, showing the terrible damage inflicted on ships by enormous guns and powerful storms; and alongside this is a brilliantly rendered sense of human emotions, because we know that this day, as well as a celebration of victory, was the start of one of the world’s most famous love affairs.

To buy the original painting or reserve it contact Charles Mayes

cm@marineartists.co.uk +44(0)79 4179 8655

The price includes professional shipping, delivery & insurance to any address world-wide

A larger photograph / full description available on request

VAT does not apply

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1048/3050/1206/files/Platje_20-_20Naples_20Vanguard_20-_20JP_20-_20framed_20large_20stamped_20-_20DSC_8398_20copy_d5a09951-a774-401d-9bc9-72096fb101b0.jpg?v=1791279935
22631
"'I have their hearts now!': HMS Victory off the Isle of Wight, Lord Nelson going aboard, 14th September 1805, HMS Euryalus in attendance"

Oil on Canvas

24 x 36 inches (61 x 91.5 cm)

Signed, lower right

Framed in a hand-finished gold frame with a white gesso slip

World-wide exclusive - only available from Marine Artists

Artist-Signed Limited Editions available on paper or canvas

From Maarten Platje’s monumental “The Hero” series of pictures depicting Victory and Nelson in the year of 1805.

The moment depicted is when Nelson boarded Victory, lying off the Isle of Wight, and prepared to leave England for what turned out to be the last time.

The date is September the 14th, 1805. Lord Cochrane, of course, decided to attack immediately and sailed Pallas straight at Minerve under the fire of the shore batteries and attack from the brigs.

Having disabled one brig, avoided disaster from the shore batteries and fired at least one broadside, Cochrane and Pallas crashed into Minerve.
